A router is a device that works with your modem to takes the data coming through the modem and routes it over the Internet to or from multiple devices via an IP (Internet Protocol) address (e.g. 192.10.1.2), which is an electronic version of a post office address (e.g. 1234 Main St. San Diego, CA 92121).
